Eleni Kharitonos: Cypriot Young Woman Joins NASA
Eleni Haritonos, 22, will join the NASA Glenn Research Center in Ohio starting January 2023.
The center designs and develops innovative technologies that advance NASA’s missions in aeronautics and space exploration.
NASA recently accepted her application for an internship. With Cypriot and American citizenship, Eleni will have the opportunity to broaden her horizons.
She develops artificial intelligence tools to support manned missions to the Moon and Mars, with a focus on medical surveillance and medical care for astronauts.
Eleni’s participation in the US Space Agency’s program was a huge success, with her application standing out among thousands of others, reports Philenews. The acceptance rate for internships at NASA is only 5%.
A young student in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Glasgow is excited about the new challenges she is taking on.

“It opened up new horizons for me, working with leading scientists in the space industry to use mathematics and statistical machine learning to contribute to projects that are part of the ARTEMIS mission at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Ohio. It gives us the opportunity to work together.”
Haritonos has successfully completed training as an analog astronaut at the LunAres Research Space Station in Poland and the HI-SEAS Space Exploration Center in Hawaii.
She is the first Cypriot candidate scientist, an astronaut-in-training at the International Space Science Institute, to graduate from the Project Possum program in Florida, USA.
She is a member of the Space Generation Advisory Council, the world’s largest non-profit space organization.
By visiting schools, universities and organizations in Cyprus, she systematically imparts her knowledge and experience to students and encourages other young people to participate in research, innovation and science.
