Emergency Director of the State of Texas led efforts to secure the impact of coronavirus deaths and leukemia in PPE
As an Emergency Management Coordinator in Texas County, David Prasifka was always watching how he could support his community.
Later last week, Prasifka became ill and doctors diagnosed him with acute leukemia, according to Atascosa judge Robert Hurley, who worked closely with Prasifka on the county’s Covid-19 efforts.
“David headed Atascosa County through the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only his humor, heart, and passion for EM work, his family will be overlooked by many,” the county official added. It was
Lifelong dedication to serve others
For more than 25 years, Prasifka was first volunteer firefighter and then chief, for more than 25 years, before being appointed as the Emergency Management Coordinator of Atascosa nearly six years ago.
Don County, the county’s EMS chief, told CNN, “David stepped in first, and never escaped the problem.” “He was on the lookout for everyone else.”
Prasifka was in the role of emergency management coordinator and already wore many hats. He investigates if someone is injured at work and takes steps to prevent it from happening again. He prepared the community for dangerous weather events and updated people about all accidents and crimes around the county.
But when the pandemic struck and soon became “overwhelmingly serious,” Prasifka “intervened at all levels,” said County judge Hurley.
“He worked in the evening and woke up early in the morning. When the PPE was unusually short, he contacted state officials. He called out all over the state for that… sometimes it was. It included driving hundreds of miles to pick up the PPE, regardless of how far he had to go or what he had to do to get it.”
Prasifka also led the county’s efforts to organize the country’s Covid-19 tests, moving test sites to different locations to make it easier for people to test.
“At least in our region of Texas, we probably have more (test sites) in our county than any other scale, and he personally operated them,” Hurley said. It was “There is no doubt (he helped save lives)…the number of counties of our size was very small until they reopened the bars and beaches.”
Two heavy diagnoses at once
Two weeks ago, Prasifka decided to test at one of Covid-19’s test sites.
He felt tired and losing weight, but blamed it on his abscess teeth. Then on Monday, he began casting a fainting spell, so he went to the doctor with the strong recommendation of his friends and family.
“David wasn’t like going to a doctor,” Harley said. The doctor diagnosed him with acute leukemia and was admitted to a hospital in San Antonio where he was retested for coronavirus, a standard procedure in the hospital.
This time it has returned to the plus.
“He called me Friday morning,” Harley said. “He told me that he was positive in his situation and tests, but he felt good. They started treating leukemia and everything would be fine. He was fine as always.”
Hurley was later told by his family that the Prashifka had been ventilated. Then by noon the next day, his organs had shut down.
“At 4:33, he died,” Harley said.
Continue his work
On Monday morning, dozens of first responders from Atascosa and the neighboring Bexar district escorted Prasifuka’s body from the hospital to the funeral home.
“I stood by the side of the road, saw the procession, and just cried,” Harley said. “There were fire departments, police departments and emergency departments from all over the world.
“Everyone is in sadness about losing David. I still can’t believe he left. He was always there and always trying to help,” he added.
Penny, the county’s head of EMS, is committed to continuing the work of Plasifka.
“It’s a shame that we were one of the greatest in Atascosa County and worked hard to keep us straight on (Covid-19),” Penny said. .. “I know he will continue his fight. We worked a lot on this together and he taught us a lot about aspects of his work.”
Prasifka leaves four sons, his wife, Donna, and five grandchildren.
Currently, no funeral is planned, but the family is asking for donations for leukemia and coronavirus research instead of flowers.
