Elton John charity donates $25 million to increase HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation)-Legendary singer Elton John and her husband David Furnace announced a $25 million grant on Thursday in a project to combat HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Approximately 1.7 million people in the region are HIV-positive, according to United Nations data, and in about 4% of the 38 million people worldwide, drug injectors, men having sex with men, sex workers, and their clients. There are most new infected people.
The grant is the first under the RADIAN partnership in partnership with the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the pharmaceutical company Gilead announced last year to address the rising HIV incidence in the region.
“The region has seen a dramatic increase of 72% in new HIV infections over the past decade, with a 23% reduction in global infection rates,” said Farnish, chairman of the 1992 Elton John AIDS Foundation. Said in a statement.
“This is shocking given the tools and therapies to prevent and treat HIV, and we are trying to keep nothing behind.”
