UC Health Recruits 1,000 Patients – CBS Denver

Aurora, Coro. (CBS4) – UC Health and CU School of Medicine are recruiting 1,000 people in Colorado for a study to test the promising COVID-19 vaccine. This vaccine does not expose participants to the virus. Participants will be monitored for at least one year to determine vaccine safety and whether they are infected with COVID-19.

Unlike traditional vaccines that expose someone to small amounts of the virus, Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine focuses on the genetic code of coronavirus and its spike proteins. The purpose of a vaccine is to elicit an antibody response to proteins that prevent the virus from infecting cells. It aims to stimulate the body’s immune system without exposing anyone to the actual virus.

“If that goes well, the Moderna vaccine could be a true transformant of a pandemic,” said Dr. Thomas Canbell, an infectious disease doctor at the CU School of Medicine and the University of Colorado Hospital.

People throughout Colorado have been invited to join, but they must travel to the University of Colorado Hospital on the CU Anschutz Medical Campus.

Potential participants will be contacted via UCHealth’s My Health Connection Patient Portal and invited to join if they meet the criteria for the study.
