Cervical Cancer Awareness Month Begins
According to the ADH, Arkansas currently ranks 16th lowest in the Papanicolaou test that can detect cervical cancer.
Arkansas, USA — January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. Teal is the color of the ribbon that represents this type of cancer. This will Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) reminds the public of free cervical and breast cancer screening and follow-up services.
The ADH BreastCare program partners with a statewide network of providers to offer these services.
Health officials say cervical cancer is largely preventable with human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and regular Pap testing to detect precancer. Nonetheless, ADH reported an estimated 160 women diagnosed with cervical cancer in Arkansas and her 50 women who died from it in 2022.
According to ADH, Arkansas currently has the 16th lowest Pap test to detect cervical cancer and the 13th lowest HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer.
Although Arkansas women’s cervical cancer screening rates have improved over the years, ADH says there is still a long way to go in improving these rates.
Health officials say women can prevent or detect cervical cancer early by undergoing regular screenings. Cancers diagnosed at a later stage (III or IV) generally have a poor prognosis and are more expensive to treat, so it’s important to get tested. Cervical cancer is one of her most effectively treatable cancers, and according to ADH, women diagnosed early have a better chance of survival.
