West Nile virus case confirmed in mosquitoes, bird sample found in Orange County
According to the county’s mosquito and vector control district, three mosquito samples collected Wednesday in Anaheim, Cypress, and Garden Grove were West Nile virus-positive, accounting for the first positive sample in Orange County this year.
Mosquitoes were collected at Cerritos Avenue and Lexington Drive in Cypress, East Sycamore and East Street in Anaheim, Garden Grove Boulevard and Garden Grove in Stafford Street.
District officer confirmed in release The carcass of a bird collected in Irvine on Thursday was also virus positive.
“Samples of West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes show that the virus is active in Orange County, increasing the risk of mosquito bites and WNV transmission to residents,” said Robert Cummings, director of district science services. Said in a statement.
Humans usually get the virus when bitten by an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes get infected by eating birds that are already infected with the virus.
Currently, no human infection has been confirmed in Orange County.
District staff continues to monitor and inspect and employ control measures in certain areas to prevent mosquito breeding. Workers post warning signs in West Nile to warn residents of areas where viral activity is actively affected.
