MDHHS raises awareness and encourages regular screening for cervical cancer
Lansing, Michigan — The state health department is encouraging Michigan residents to get screened for cervical cancer during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), 75% of diagnoses of the disease occur in women aged 30-64, and this age group accounts for 60% of cervical cancer deaths.
The risk of late-stage cervical cancer is much greater among blacks in non-Hispanic Michigan, adds MDHHS.
“In the early stages, cervical cancer may not cause any symptoms,” says Chief Medical Officer Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian. “Routine cervical cancer screening is the most effective way to detect cervical cancer early and when it is most treatable, and the first step is to talk to your health care provider.”
It is recommended that women start cervical cancer screening every three years at age 21 and have one of the following between the ages of 30 and 65:
- Pap smear every 3 years.
- HPV testing should be done every 5 years.
- A simultaneous HPV and Pap smear test is done every 5 years.
