Miami – January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. It is a disease that can be treated and prevented with the HPV vaccine if it can be detected early through screening.
Last year, when Nora Lindo Salmon started having severe stomach pains, she went to the doctor at her son’s urging.
“They said I had cancer, but they said they didn’t think I had cancer yet.
Originally from Jamaica, she did not have regular gynecological examinations.
Stella Lymberis, Ph.D., radiation oncologist at NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center, said:
Dr. Lymberis says cervical cancer is treatable if detected early. For Nora, she underwent her five weeks of chemotherapy and internal radiation therapy called brachytherapy.
“This is the safest way to deliver radiation and can reduce side effects,” Dr. Lymberis said.
A new report from the American Cancer Society estimates that 13,690 new cases will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year, and 4,310 women will die from the disease. However, as the use of the Pap test increased, mortality decreased significantly. The report also shows that between 2012 and her 2019, the incidence of cervical cancer in women aged 20 to her 24 decreased by 65% compared to her. This was after the introduction of her HPV vaccine, which protected her from the papillomavirus that causes cervical cancer in humans.
According to the American Cancer Society website, “The American Cancer Society recommends getting the HPV vaccine between the ages of 9 and 12.”
Nora completed treatment in June and is now disease-free.
“Today I am great. I feel great,” she said.
She encourages women to get tested and screened once a year.
“I want to tell them, don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid, be strong, take the first step,” Salmon said.
The American Cancer Society says high HPV vaccination rates could virtually eradicate cervical cancer.
