Coronavirus UK: 43 regions with a sharp rise in cases

New data show 43 municipalities with the fastest growing coronavirus cases in the UK.

Southampton endured the largest weekly increase in infection rates, jumping from just 0.4 cases per 100,000 to 4.8 cases last week. This means that the city has experienced an increase in infection of 1087.50%.

This was followed by several London boroughs including Bromley, Islington, Hackney and Lambeth. Bromley cases increased from 0.6 cases per 100,000 to 2.1, Islington increased from 0.8 to 2.9, Hackney from 1.4 to 4.3 and Lambeth from 0.3 to 0.9.

Tyne and Wear’s Gateshead was also ranked high as the number of infections increased from 0.5 to 100 per 100,000. Big hikes were also seen in Hampshire, Coventry, Gloucestershire, Newham, Redbridge and Camden.

Figures released by the British Public Health Agency also revealed an 18% reduction in the number of Leicester cases. The city is still the worst affected area in England, but the infection rate dropped from 141.3 to 116 after the area was closed last month.

Rochdale and Bradford are also one of England’s worst hit areas, but still well behind Leicester. In Rochdale, it was 32.7 cases per 100,000 cases, down from 35.0 last week, and in Bradford it was 31.8 cases down from 45.8.

The current national infection rate is 6.4 per 100,000 people and 33 local governments are currently pushing the average. According to figures released by the British Public Health Service, 53 authorities confirmed that the infection rate was the same as last week or increased compared to last week.

However, the increase in the number of cases does not necessarily mean that the virus has gone out of control in the area, as it may be the result of more testing being done.

In some areas, the actual number of cases of coronaviruses is very low, and with just a handful of new infections, it may appear as if the cases had a large spike. Experts almost always look in the areas with the highest number of cases.

In Thursday’s Commons, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said “good news” about the decline in Leicester’s infection rate, but said the city should remain blocked until at least 18 July.

The Director of Health then re-evaluates progress in the area and makes decisions about what can be restarted. Hancock refused to give a number on how much the infection rate had to go down before the regulations were relaxed.
