New XXB.1.5 covid variant spreads rapidly
Sioux Falls, South Dakota (KELO) – A new variant of COVID-19 is spreading rapidly across the United States. Although it has not led to an increase in hospitalizations or deaths, health care providers are concerned about how quickly the new XXB.1.5 variant is spreading.
“We used to see changes on the coast, and four to six weeks later we saw the same virus change in the Midwest. This seems to have made all the grounds for that in about two weeks,” Sanford said. Dr. Jeremy Cowwells, Chief Physician at Health, said.
And now that XXB.1.5 is out, Dr. Cauwels says it’s already spreading rapidly at the regional level.
“Previously, it took five to six days to see if you had symptoms. This seems to take one to two days before you know you have symptoms,” Dr. Cauwels said.
Symptoms are typical COVID indicators such as fever, respiratory concerns and dry cough. Dr. Cauwels says he one of the common symptoms is changing now.
“One of the things that’s gone is the loss of taste and smell. That’s why we don’t see it as often as we used to. Cold and flu-like symptoms are very noticeable.”
Sanford Health has consistently seen about 50 people hospitalized each day due to covid. The arrival of XBB.1.5 hasn’t changed that.
“The good news is that this doesn’t appear to be causing more hospitalizations, nor does it appear to be causing more deaths. The bad news is that we’re seeing an increase in overall infections. said Dr. Cowwells.
Dr. Cauwels says the new variant isn’t causing panic, but it’s a good reminder to make sure your COVID-19 vaccine is up to date.
“Vaccines still play a role in preventing hospitalizations and deaths, which is what vaccines are supposed to do, and we still advocate for them, and especially the treatments we can give people if they get infected, Especially with the pills, so it’s still a really good time to get tested, especially if there’s a reason your health isn’t perfect,” Dr. Cowwells said.
Dr Cauwels believes covid is now endemic and will continue to be dealt with seasonally, and we will continue to see new subspecies that may be more or less contagious or severe.
