New guidelines recommend early and aggressive treatment of childhood obesity
Childhood obesity is epidemic.
“Throughout the 1990s we started to see the state of weight change dramatically, and by the early 2000s it was very clear that something very different was happening.”
“Every day I’m in the clinic, I take care of an obese child,” says Dr. Mona Hanna Atisha. “There are probably only a handful of successful cases that have been able to reverse that obesity.”
That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new guidelines. Things like family counseling, healthier eating.
“I literally said to my patients, ‘You need to eat better. Think avocados, kale, etc.,'” says Dr. Hanna-Attisha. “And my parents were literally staring at me, ‘Where can I buy it? Where can I buy it?'”
The guidelines go even further. They even suggest medications and surgeries for younger children.
