West Nile found in Kent County, monitored by local authorities-News-Holland Sentinel
Local agencies continue to monitor local mosquito populations as the nearby Kent County has detected West Nile virus in mosquitoes in recent weeks.
The Ottawa County Public Health Department and the Allegan County Health Department participate in surveillance and prevention programs for vector-borne diseases through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The purpose of this program is to identify a population of mosquito species that can transmit diseases that can spread Lyme disease and deer ticks (black ticks).
Each county sets up traps to catch mosquitoes and clicks in the area before reporting species and counts to the state.
The program is not for the disease itself, but for the surveillance of vectors that spread the disease, OCDPH said. Surveillance activities last approximately 14 weeks.
Since 2015, there are only three human cases of West Nile virus in the county, one in 2015 and two in 2018, according to data from the Ottawa County website. Allegan County data also show three cases since 2015, all reported in 2018.
Although there are no human cases this year in Kent County, mosquitoes carrying the disease have been identified in four separate postcodes as of Thursday.
The Kent County Department of Health reported West Nile positive mosquitoes in postcodes 49504, 49506, 49316, and 49525. KCHD Hygiene Manager Brendan Earle told WOOD-TV 8 that the West Nile River was detected earlier than usual this year.
“Usually we see positive mosquito pools from late July to early August, but this year is quite different,” Earl told a television station. “At the end of June, we won our first positive pool, because it was a hot and dry summer.”
He explained that the types of mosquitoes that carry the West Nile are commonly bred in urban rainwater basins. Without the rain to wash out those basins, there are more mosquitoes and previous identifications of the West Nile.
“We are quite concerned about the spread of the West Nile virus,” Earl said. “The positive pools obtained, especially during this period, indicate that this year is going to be a very bad year, not only for the mosquito but also for the West Nile virus epidemic.”
OCDPH said that the presence of West Nile in Kent County “may be in the area” and, as always, recommends that preventive measures be taken to keep the population from being bitten. Said.
Preventive measures include limiting outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants outdoors, using repellents including DEET, reducing or eliminating standing water, and reducing breeding grounds. There are lawns and arrangements for planting.
