Pine Belt, Mississippi (WDAM) – according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 37.3 million Americans have diabetes. This means that finding individual medications and treatment options can be very difficult.
One popular drug is Ozempic, which is also FDA-approved to combat weight loss. Bo Hayden, a pharmacist at Pinebelt, says he’s one of the reasons the drug is getting harder to find.
“The drug’s popularity has outstripped its availability,” Hayden said. “So many people with diabetes run into the same problem as people trying to get diabetes for weight loss. There’s just not enough in the market right now to meet the demand.”
This shortage is already affecting Mississippi diabetics like Ruby Holder.
“People’s lives are at risk because it’s being taken by people who don’t need it,” Holder said.
Holder lives in Wiggins. She is frustrated that this new problem is out of her control.
“People with diabetes have to go through a lot already,” added Holder. “Insulin is expensive and people don’t know what diabetes is or how to manage it.”
Hayden says the manufacturer is aware of the problem and hopes it will be fixed soon, but he strongly advises diabetics not to go without medication.
“Check around and be sure to call and ask for options,” Hayden said. “There are other drugs similar to Ozempic that could be an option to try until we can get back to Ozempic, and there are other classes of drugs.”
Hayden believes the issue should be resolved soon.
