Virginia is a leader in bird flu response.Low numbers in Commonwealth
Roanoke, Virginia (WFXR) — Egg prices are at or near record highs. This is because of the bird flu pandemic. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that egg stocks are 29% lower than they were a year ago, as bird flu depleted egg-laying flocks.
Although there have been numerous outbreaks in the United States, there has been only one outbreak in a commercial flock in Virginia, reported on 19 January at a Rockingham County turkey facility. Commonwealth-instituted protocols and management practices to prevent the spread of disease.
These rules and practices are maintained by a special task force established after the 2002 outbreak. State agricultural officials, farmers, and poultry industry leaders set up their task forces to prevent further outbreaks. Poultry industry experts say Virginia is a model for other states.
“After the 2002 outbreak, we developed a prevention and rapid response plan that ultimately became the model for the national response plan,” said Virginia Poultry Federation President Hobie Bauhan. “We conducted tabletop exercises and developed audited biosecurity standards.
From an economic point of view, we had to come up with a plan to fight bird flu.
“Poultry farming is Virginia’s largest agricultural sector,” Bauhan says. “It has about $5 billion of economic impact, direct impact. We support 1,100 family farms, so it is very important not only for the agricultural sector, but for the economy in general.”
No other commercial flock infections have been reported in Virginia since last week. Bauhan says the Virginia task force took immediate action and took steps to stop the virus from spreading.
Animal disease experts say this strain of bird flu is slightly different from strains in past outbreaks, making it difficult to keep under control. No, but this strain has been able to persist through the summer since it was first detected over a year ago.
