Capital Region Pioneer in COVID-19 Wastewater Tracking Speaks of Expansion to Testing for RSV, Flu
Albany, New York (NEWS10) — New York state is trying to wash away RSV and flu using methods that help stem the tide of COVID-19.Ho Chul’s office announced this week $21.6 Million Funding to Expand State Wastewater Monitoring Network.
Professor Yanna Liang, who is also head of the Department of Environmental and Sustainable Engineering at UAlbany, explains:
Liang and Siena College Associate Professor Kate Meierdiercks, one of the pioneers in the metropolitan area, saw the potential to use sewage to track COVID trends. Findings like this, they say, help public health agencies know where to pool resources.
“We can amplify that gene, or some genes, and tell you if this virus is present. We can know the number of viruses that will be released,” explains Liang. NEWS10 Michaela Singleton.
“This will allow the state to use these resources more efficiently and target areas where support is really needed,” said Meierdiercks, who also chairs the Department of Environmental Sciences.
The state’s existing networks can help track COVID and polio. New funding will add pilot programs to test more pathogens, including RSV and influenza. Meierdiercks says the clandestine method using wastewater is especially useful in the later stages of the COVID pandemic as well.
“Because wastewater testing does not rely on people self-reporting, we tend to have a better understanding of what is going on without extensive testing,” she explains.

“Yeah, some of our samples are a little smelly when we’re there, but I also have two kids. So what we deal with at home on a daily basis, Or nothing worse than what healthcare workers are dealing with,” laughs Meierdiercks.
“There is a processing step that removes all other unwanted components, so we can focus on the virus,” adds Liang.
RSV and flu pilots will begin in Erie, Onondaga, Jefferson and Westchester counties first. The governor’s office says their results will help inform future expansion of wastewater monitoring for these diseases.
