DPH promotes heart health in February
VALDOSTA – The Georgia Department of Public Health is encouraging residents to take steps to reduce their risk of heart disease.

February is Heart Month, and Public Health wants to remind everyone to take care of their hearts this month and every month.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Georgia Department of Public Health’s South Health District wants to remind residents that there are steps they can take to reduce their risk of heart disease and take care of their hearts.
Here are some ways people can keep their hearts healthy:
- Get Active – Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.Maintain body mass index (BMI) below 25 kg/m2.
- Healthy Diet – A diet high in fruits and vegetables, cereal fiber, meat (poultry and fish), nuts, legumes, and low saturated and trans fats.
- Quit Smoking – Call the Georgia Tobacco Quit Line at 1-877-270-STOP(7867) or sign up for a quit smoking class.
- Get a checkup – Take an active role in your health by getting a regular checkup. Also, monitor your blood pressure.
Another tip for improving heart health is to focus on self-care. Dedicating a little time each day to taking care of yourself can help protect your mental health. Simple self-care like taking time to de-stress, making more time to move, preparing healthier meals, and not cheating on your sleep are all good for your heart.
