Patients with hyperglycemic Covid-19 face twice the risk of death, a new study says

“For the first time in this study, elevated FBG on admission was independently associated with increased 28-day mortality and the percentage of nosocomial complications in Covid-19 patients with no previous diagnosis of diabetes.” It was the first time to show that,” wrote a research author at Huazhong University in China.
The findings, published in the journal Diabetologia, investigated the association between FBG on admission and 28-day mortality in patients with Covid-19 who were not previously diagnosed with diabetes in two hospitals.
In a retrospective study, two hospitals based in Wuhan, China, measured FBG measurements from January 24 to February 10 on admission with all Covid-19 patients with known outcomes on day 28. Evaluated

Demographic and clinical data, 28-day outcomes, nosocomial complications, and CRB-65 scores in Covid-19 patients from two hospitals were analyzed.
The CRB-65 score is an effective measure for assessing the severity of pneumonia and is based on four indicators. Confusion level, respiratory rate, systolic or diastolic blood pressure, and age.
A total of 605 Covid-19 patients were enrolled, 114 of whom died in hospital.

The results showed that patients in the highest FBG group died 2.3 times more often than the lowest statistically significant patients.
People in the medium (pre-diabetic) FBG group were 71% more likely to die than those in the lowest group, but the results had only borderline statistical significance.
The data also showed that men were 75% more likely to die than women, and patients with high CRB65 scores (and thus worse pneumonia) were also at higher risk of death.

Looking at the FBG and CRB65 scores together, the study found that patients in the highest FBG group had an increased risk of death compared to the lowest risk.
The risk of complications was also found to be 4 times higher in the highest FBG group compared to the lowest group and 2.6 times higher in the middle (pre-diabetic) group compared to the lowest group.
“We also showed that FBGs of 7.0 mmol / l and above were associated with increased mortality, regardless of whether the patient had more or less severe pneumonia,” the authors write.

“Patients with conditions unrelated to diabetes, such as severe sepsis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and traumatic brain injury, tend to have abnormally high blood glucose levels,” they added.
