Female representation on ASCO panels is increasing, but all-male panels remain
According to a study published in , the number of women sitting on panels at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting has increased in recent years. JNCI Cancer Spectrum.
However, this study also indicated that there was still an all-male panel, or “manel,” at the ASCO Annual Meeting, and women were underrepresented in the panel for sessions on genitourinary cancers and translational/preclinical research. We have also shown that it remains the same.
In this study, researchers evaluated a panel of 670 people at the 2018-2021 ASCO Annual Meetings. Overall, 47.7% of her panelists were women (1181/2475).

The percentage of female panelists increased from 41.6% in 2018 to 54.0% in 2021 (P. <.001). The proportion of female chairs/moderators did not increase significantly from her 46.8% in 2018 to her 54.8% in 2021 (P. =.157).
Female representatives by panel type
There was a significant increase in the proportion of women on the panel for:
- medical oncology session, from 42.3% in 2018 to 52.8% in 2021 (P. =.003)
- Radiation oncology session, 31.8% to 61.5% (P. =.008)
- Leadership/Special Session, 28.6% to 67.9% (P. =.001)
- educational sessions, 38.4% to 53.6% (P. <.001).
Although there was no significant change in the proportion of women on the science session panel, the proportion of women on the science panel increased numerically from 48.8% in 2018 to 52.7% in 2021 (P. =.463).
Throughout the study period, women remained underrepresented in panels in sessions on genitourinary cancers and translational/preclinical studies. The proportion of women on the translational/preclinical panel was 27.4% for her in 2018 and 41.8% for her in 2021 (P. =.031). The proportion of women in the genitourinary cancer panel was 41.1% in 2018 and 40.7% in 2021 (P. =.969).
Manells in decline
Overall, 12.1% (n=81) of the panel were Manel. Manel had the highest percentages in Leadership/Special Sessions (17.1%) and Translational/Preclinical Research Sessions (19.6%). Manel had the lowest percentages in the science session (4.2%) and supportive oncology session (2.8%).
Manel’s overall share decreased from 17.4% in 2018 to 9.9% in 2021 (P. =.030). The percentage of manel in educational sessions decreased from 22.2% to 12.9% (P. =.037), and Manel’s percentage of Leadership/Special Sessions decreased from 25.0% to 0% (P. =.057).
The researchers noted that there is also an all-female panel. The percentage of all female panels was 6.3% in 2018, 5.8% in 2019, 12.7% in 2020, and 12.6% in 2021.
