Man believed to be cured of HIV after stem cell transplant
The man known only as the “Düsseldorf patient” appears to be one of the handful of people who have been cured of HIV.
According to an article published in a medical journal,NatureA 53-year-old patient was declared virus-free 10 years after surgery to replace bone marrow cells with HIV-resistant stem cells obtained from a donor.
The man reportedly had HIV when he was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia. Doctors at Düsseldorf University Hospital in Germany performed a stem cell transplant, destroying cancerous bone marrow cells and replacing them with cells with genetic mutations that made them resistant to the virus.
In the years that followed, doctors continued to find immune cells that reacted to HIV, suggesting the virus was still in his body. I did not know.
To learn more about the man’s condition, studies show that when his situation was replicated in mice, the cells did not replicate.
According to the study, men stopped antiretroviral therapy to lower HIV levels in 2018. After 5 years, the patient is HIV-free.
Virologist Björn-Erik Jensen tells Nature that this patient has found HIV very difficult to clear from his body, but that doesn’t mean that treatment can’t stop it from replicating.
