Drug-resistant gastroenteritis infections on the rise: CDC

27 February 2023 – Health officials warn that the rise in drug-resistant forms of Shigella poses a ‘serious public health threat’.

CDC caveat Friday about the rise in problematic infections. Most of them are found in men who have sex with men, but a few are also found in women and young children.

Bacteria can be spread in a number of ways, including changing an infected baby’s diaper, touching the mouth when the bacteria is on the hands, eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and sexual contact. It is easily contagious because a tiny amount of bacteria is enough to make someone sick.

Shigella infection causes bloody diarrhea. Other symptoms include fever, abdominal cramps, and a feeling that the intestines are already empty when you need to poop. Most people recover on their own with rest and hydration, and antibiotic treatment may be required in severe cases. However, strains of bacteria that are resistant to treatment are increasing.

Between 2015 and 2022, antibiotic-resistant Shigella infection cases increased from 0% to 5% of all Shigella cases in the United States. One analysis showed that 82% of cases were male, 13% were female, and 5% were children. A small sample of affected people provided information on sexual activity, and 88% of them reported sexual contact between men.

People at high risk of infection are young children, homeless people, international travelers, people with weakened immune systems, people living with HIV, and men who have sex with men.
