Depression may increase stroke risk and impede recovery
March 9, 2023 – People with depression may be at higher risk of stroke and have a harder time recovering from it, according to new research.

The average age of study participants was 62 years. Stroke was confirmed in about half of them. These people were matched with similar individuals who had never had a stroke. Participants completed a questionnaire about heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Researchers also asked about symptoms of depression.
The study found that 18% of participants who had a stroke had symptoms of depression compared to 14% of those who did not.
“After adjusting for age, gender, education, physical activity, and other lifestyle factors, people with symptoms of depression prior to stroke had a 46% increased risk of stroke compared with those without symptoms of depression. Did.” neuroscience news report.
