State Health Officer, Minister’s Statement on Spring COVID-19 Booster
BC State Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Health Adrian Dix released the following statement regarding the Spring COVID-19 Booster.
“As we enter the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to remain vigilant to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities from COVID-19. This includes keeping up-to-date on immunization, an essential tool in combating the spread of HIV.
“The National Immunization Advisory Committee (NACI) recently issued guidance on additional booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. BC intends to adopt this guidance. People at higher risk for serious illness, including the elderly, Indigenous people over 70, and those over 18 with moderate to severe immunocompromise, are eligible for a spring booster.
“In addition to high-risk individuals, indigenous peoples aged 60 or older or 50 or older who have never had COVID-19 can also consider receiving a spring booster dose.
“We also continue to ensure that all people aged 6 months and older, including those aged 18 and over who have not received a bivalent booster, are vaccinated with a primary dose and, if eligible, a booster dose. “It is important to note that individuals who have not yet been vaccinated are at increased risk of contracting and spreading the infection and becoming more severely ill with COVID-19. It is strongly recommended that you get the vaccine as soon as possible, and if you have not already done so, consider getting a bivalent booster.
“Three years after the pandemic, we are all familiar with the power of vaccines. We were able to get back to our normal routines, get together with friends and family, and get back to work and school in person, all of which are essential to our health and well-being.
“We thank everyone in B.C. for continuing to roll up their sleeves and look out for each other. Together, we will continue to come out of this pandemic stronger.”
