Studies show that tall children are at high risk of developing obesity
Children taller than age are at increased risk of developing obesity, according to a new study.
In a study published on obesity, researchers looked at the health records of the 2.8 million children initially tested between the ages of 2 and 13.
According to the survey, on average, four years later (but up to 13 years later), taller children tended to have higher body mass indexes than shorter children.
For example, among the first thinnest children, the prevalence of obesity at the second test was five times higher in the tallest children than in the tallest children (3.1% vs. 0.6%). Among the heaviest children initially, the prevalence of each of obesity was 89.5 percent versus 53.4 percent.
The association between height and obesity at the second test was strongest in children first tested before age 7.
“Approximately half of this association is independent of the child’s early body mass index, so using height may be a simpler way to more accurately classify which child becomes obese,” he says. The author, Dr. David S Friedman, said: Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
