Wildlife officials said four sea otters were killed by a parasite known as Toxoplasma gondii.
“So we have four confirmed cases right now. Three of them are from San Luis Obispo County, from San Simeon to Morro Bay, and a fourth is off the coast of Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz County. “Knowing that Toxoplasma can infect humans, we urge our collaborators working on the causes of mortality in marine mammals to take extra precautions,” Miller said.
However, there are no confirmed human cases yet.
Toxoplasma infections in sea otters aren’t new, Miller said, but this particular strain, first discovered in cougars, is more virulent and causes more serious lesions than sea otters are accustomed to. This was the cause of death for all four of his sea otters found on the Central Coast. Unlike cats, otters cannot pass diseases to humans.
