National Colon Awareness Month: Health Experts Encourage Screening
Bryan, Texas — It’s National Colorectal Awareness Month, and there are precautions you can take now to stay healthy in the future.
Dr. Jason McKnight, Associate Clinical Professor at Texas A&M Health, said:
Dr. McKnight of Texas A&M Health analyzes what colorectal cancer is.
“Colorectal cancer usually begins as something called a polyp. So a polyp is a very small abnormal tissue somewhere in the colon or rectal area that grows and becomes abnormal over time. , can eventually turn into cancer,” said Dr. McKnight.
Dr. McKnight believes this tissue formation process can take up to 10 years and stresses the importance of staying current in cancer screening.
“Just because you have one colonoscopy and it’s all clear doesn’t mean you won’t have polyps later in life,” says Dr. McKnight.
The ability to view past screens allows doctors to identify abnormal tissue early and prevent future cancer diagnoses.
Joe Thomas is a cancer survivor and lives in Bryan.
“We were lucky that it wasn’t too late,” said Joe Thomas. “It was the third stage for me. I’m very happy to show that if I didn’t deal with it first, I could no longer deal with it.”
Breast cancer may be less common in men, but they are regularly screened for all cancers, including colon cancer.
“Cancer can be a bad problem anywhere,” said Thomas. “The colon, chest, anywhere on the body can be a serious problem. Dealing with something you can’t handle without help can be devastating.”
Free screening is available through the Texas A&M Family Residency Program and the School of Public Health.
“A grant through CPRIT, the Cancer Prevention Institute in Texas, will help pay for colorectal cancer screening in rural and underserved populations.”
