Fungus behind disease devastating bat populations found in southeastern BC
A fungus known to cause a deadly disease among bats has invaded British Columbia.

White-nose syndrome attacks bats by disrupting hibernation and is responsible for devastating bat populations across North America.
Its high mortality rate is why three bat species are listed as “endangered” in Canada, the ministry said.
The disease was first discovered in New York State in 2006 and has spread to 38 and 8 states. The disease first appeared in Saskatchewan last summer, and he first appeared in Alberta in January.
The state has been monitoring white nose syndrome since it was first detected on the West Coast of the United States in 2016.
“The Department of Water, Land and Resources Management is working with multiple partners to strengthen surveillance of this disease and reduce its threat to bat habitats,” the release reads.
“Bats feed on a wide variety of insects and pests and are essential to the balance of B.C.’s ecosystems.”
The ministry said the contagious fungus is mainly spread by direct contact between bats. It does not affect humans, but it can be spread by human activity, Mnistry added.
“As there is currently no proven prevention or cure for white-nose syndrome, the best approach to bat conservation is to support healthy and resilient populations of bats facing this disease by providing other It’s about reducing the threat,” the ministry said.
“Scientists are working together to better understand bat behavior and habitat use in winter, when bats are at risk from fungi.”
The state requires reports from anyone who knows where bats roost in winter. It also asks people to report any unusual bat behavior, such as flying during the day, or dead bats they find.
