Paduka — If you have kids in elementary school, you know firsthand that germs are everywhere. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently tracking a surge in streptococcal infections nationwide.
Over the past five years, the CDC estimates that 14,000 to 25,000 cases of streptococcal pharyngitis occurred each year. Doctors expect to see streptococcal cases from December to April, but this year will see more cases.
The weather on Monday was perfect for the kids to be outside and have fun. A mother of two, her Ragon Fugate took the kids to Noble Park in Paducah to kick off spring break and boost their immune systems.
She said sunshine was the best for her sons. Several children in her son’s first grade class and baseball team are currently battling strep throat. She’s trying to get her own family ahead of the virus.
“We’ve tried to take some precautions. We’ve put them in Emergen-C gummies for kids. Then my husband and I take the packets you mix in water.”
Fugate knows that younger children don’t always survive illness. Her thoughts are in line with Dr. John Cecil.
“Kids are magnets for germs. If you have streptococci around them, they’re always wiping their noses and things like that going from hand to mouth. You’ll have a little more exposure.” said Baptiste’s public health doctor.
Currently, he treats three to five streptococcal patients daily, who experience normal symptoms. These symptoms include headaches, sore throats, fevers and tender neck glands, Cecil said.
He said it’s been up more recently than last year, but not worse than we’ve seen pre-COVID.
Fugate does everything she can to keep her children healthy.
“Make sure they don’t share drinks. Teach them to cover their mouths and wash their hands.”
Cecil said that if you or your child feels unwell, the best thing to do is go to the doctor and get tested. It may remove the good bacteria that your body has.
