Pregnant women face rare COVID-19 risk of brain damage in babies, researchers say
Miami – Dr. Merline Benny, a pediatrician at the University of Miami’s Miller College of Medicine, says COVID-19 is having a profound impact on global health, and even more so for pregnant women.
A new study recently published in The Journal of Pediatrics shows that COVID-19 can enter the placenta of pregnant women and cause brain damage in newborns.
The case list includes two neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit of Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.
“We found evidence that the virus did indeed cross the placenta and infect the brain,” said Dr. Ali Saad.
Both babies were born fairly early in the delta wave pandemic, before a COVID-19 vaccine was available, and both mothers contracted COVID during their second trimester.
The baby showed seizure-like symptoms. Their brains stopped growing soon after birth. One baby died at 13 months of age while the COVID-19 virus was still in the baby’s brain.
The two cases are rare, as clinicians in Miami report hundreds of babies born to mothers who test positive for COVID-19.
“The message here is that most women with COVID will have healthy babies, but don’t panic, some will have sick babies,” says NICU medical director Shahnaz Duara. says the doctor. “But I think these are extremes and if you’ve had COVID while pregnant you should tell your pediatrician and maybe those babies need a little more close follow-up.”
Dr. Michael Paidas said researchers are continuing their lab work to understand the pathology of COVID-19 and develop treatments for it.
