Rabies fox found in Alabama County, second case in year in area
A fox found on Broadway Avenue in Avon in Houston County tested positive for rabies, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.
The fox was spotted last week when a homeowner was alerted to the animal in his yard by a barking dog. The fox was taken to a state clinical laboratory where rabies was confirmed. The homeowner and his dog are “receiving proper care,” ADPH said.
This is the second laboratory-confirmed case of rabies in Houston County this year. The first case came when a raccoon found dead in the town of Pansy in February tested positive for rabies.
This finding highlights the importance of rabies vaccination in pets.
Dr. Dee W. Jones, the state’s public health veterinarian, said in a press release, “Given the situation in which two rabies animals are currently in the same general area, all pets should be properly tested for rabies.” “It’s a strong reminder that people should be vaccinated,” he said.
Alabama law requires rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets over 12 weeks of age. Rabies vaccines are also available for horses and other domestic animals, as recommended by veterinarians.
To prevent rabies, ADPH recommends:
- Do not let pets loose, confine them in fenced areas, or keep them on leashes.
- Do not leave leftover food or leftovers near your residence.
- Do not illegally feed wildlife or keep it as a pet.
- Stay away from wild or domestic animals exhibiting strange or unusual behavior.
- Remind children to stay away from stray or wild animals, regardless of their behavior.
