COVAXIN: Patna AIIMS Starts Human Trial of Coronavirus Vaccine Today
Patna from the All-Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will begin human trials of the Coronavirus Vaccine-Covaxin today (13 July 2020). COVAXIN, developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR-NIV, is India’s first COVID-19 vaccine.
AIIMS-Patna is one of 12 medical institutions selected by the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) to conduct human trials of the indigenous COVID-19 vaccine (BBV152 COVID vaccine). The trail will be conducted by 18 volunteers selected by hospital authorities.
The selected volunteers will first undergo a medical examination on Monday, analyze the report, and then proceed further on the trail. Vaccines derived from ICMR-NIV, a strain of SARS-CoV-2 isolated by Pune, showed safety and immune response in preclinical studies.
Several people contacted AIIMS Hospital to participate in the trail, but only 18 from 18 to 55 were selected for the process.
In accordance with ICMR guidelines, the first dose of vaccine will be given only to those that are well-reported. After the initial administration of the vaccine, the patient is kept under the supervision of a doctor for a few hours and then sent to their home.

To date, the vaccine prototype, originally developed by the pharmaceutical companies Bharat Biotech International Ltd and Zydus Cadila, has been approved for human testing by the Indian Drug Controller General. ZyCoV-D from Zydus Caldia has also been licensed.
