Researchers discover new Alzheimer’s disease biomarker detectable in blood

Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Sweden have identified a sugar molecule that can be detected in an individual’s blood up to 10 years before diagnosis as a potential new biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease.

Glycans are sugar molecules found on the surface of proteins that allow scientists to localize them.

“The role of glycans, structures made up of sugar molecules, is a relatively unexplored area in dementia research,” says a medical student and director of KI’s Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences, and Society (NVS). Related research fellow and lead author Robin Zhou said: of research.

“Our study shows that blood levels of glycans change early in the onset of the disease, which means that blood tests and memory tests alone can predict Alzheimer’s disease risk.”

The researchers found that elevated sugar levels correlated with increased levels of tau protein, a well-known biomarker for the disease. Those with matching glycan and tau levels were more than twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those without.

“We also predict Alzheimer’s disease almost 10 years in advance of symptoms such as memory with 80% confidence using a simple statistical model that considers blood glycan and tau levels, the risk gene APOE4, and memory tests. It also shows what we can do, we will see the losses,” said Sophia Schedin Weiss, head of NVS, KI, in a press statement.

This survey was conducted using results from over 200 participants. Swedish national survey on aging and care in Kungsholmen (snack). Individuals were monitored regularly for a total of 17 years. Factors checked during follow-up included memory loss and the presence of dementia.

To further understand the role of biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease Pathologists hope to analyze blood samples from more participants in aging studies around the world.

“We are evaluating different biomarkers of dementia in primary health care centers in collaboration with Swedish primary care researchers. We hope it will be a complementary screening method,” Weiss concluded.
