Russia may launch Phase III trial of COVID-19 vaccine in mid-August: RIA

MOSCOW (Reuters)-Russian research institute developing one of the country’s potential coronavirus vaccines hopes to begin final-stage testing in a small section of the general public in mid-August. The RIA news agency said Monday it quoted the director of the institute.

Globally, of the 19 COVID-19 vaccines, only two in human trials are in the final Phase III trial. One is from China’s Synopham, and the other is from AstraZeneca and Oxford University. Sinovac Biotech in China will be third later this month.

According to another RIA report on Sunday, early results from the first small human trial of the vaccine developed by the Gamalya Research Institute in Moscow show that it is safe to use.

“Around August 14th-15th, I hope a small amount of vaccines we should be able to produce will go public,” said Alexander Ginsberg of the institute.

This is equivalent to a phase III trial, as those who have the vaccine remain under supervision, the RIA reported, citing Ginsberg.

Phase I and Phase II trials usually test the safety of the drug before entering the Phase III trial, which tests efficacy against a larger group of volunteers.

A human trial of the Gamaleya vaccine vaccine began on June 18, with nine volunteers receiving one dose and another nine testing booster boost doses.

The group did not experience any serious side effects and will be released from the hospital on Wednesday, the RIA reported on Sunday, citing the director of Szeshnov University in Moscow, where the trial was held.

“Currently available data… indicate that volunteers have developed an immune response to the coronavirus vaccine,” the Department of Defense involved in the trial was quoted by the RIA as saying Monday. On June 23, another 20 volunteers were vaccinated in a military hospital.
