Sudbury Health Unit suspends COVID-19 risk index due to declining trend in illness

Public Health Sudbury and Districts has suspended the COVID-19 risk index it launched last year.

This metric looks at indicators such as hospitalizations, active outbreaks, and wastewater testing to show your COVID-19 risk level.

Risk was indicated as low, medium, high, and very high, along with an indication of the level of precautions people should take to protect themselves from the virus.

Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, health department health physician and chief executive officer, said the tool was “inactive” on Monday because the risk from COVID-19 has decreased.

“I think the risk of serious illness has decreased over time, and that’s because of the vaccinations we’ve received,” she said.

“In our area, we get very good coverage with two doses and reasonable coverage with booster doses.”

Sutcliffe said the health department is recommending those at high risk of complications from COVID-19 to keep their vaccinations up to date and to continue wearing masks in high-risk situations. .

Sutcliffe said the risk index is currently inactive, but the health department continues to update its website three times a week with the latest cases and outbreaks reported in the region.

She added that the COVID-19 Risk Index could be reopened if cases spike or a worrying new variant is detected.
