(Gray News) – Marijuana is known to be appetizing, and worms appear to have the same effect.
According to new research share online by journal biology todaythe nematodes responded to cannabis in the same way as most humans.
“Cannabinoids make the nematodes hungry for foods they like and less hungry for foods they don’t like,” said Sean Rockery. University of Oregon“Thus, the effects of cannabinoids in nematodes are comparable to those of marijuana on appetite in humans.”
The team said the tiny worms are smaller than a human eyelash and decided to soak the worms in cannabinoids, active substances found in weeds, for a “Friday afternoon experiment.”
Lockery says he was inspired by the experiment when cannabis was legalized in Oregon in 2015.
“At the time, university laboratories were heavily involved in evaluating food preferences in nematodes,” says Lockery. “And this paper is the result of years of follow-up research.”
The team shared that their research finally revealed that worms, like humans, engage in hedonic feeding.
“C. elegans diverged from a lineage that led to mammals over 500 million years ago,” says Lockery. “It’s really surprising that the effects of cannabinoids on appetite are conserved over this long period of evolution.”
According to Lockery, the worm’s findings aren’t just exciting. But they also have important practical implications.
“Cannabinoid signaling is present in most tissues in our body,” he said.
