ACCT Philadelphia still needs help placing dogs by Monday due to canine flu outbreak at kennels
Philadelphia (WPVI) — ACCT Philadelphia still desperately trying to find a home For dogs that need to leave the shelter by this Monday.
According to the nonprofit, dozens of dogs have contracted canine flu, and while those animals are being quarantined and cared for, they are trying to place healthy animals to ensure their safety.
Authorities said the shelter was able to accommodate dozens of dogs last week, but more animals are still coming in.
Shelter executive director Sarah Barnett said: “Our officers are picking up two dogs. We have two more in now, so we’re already four and they just opened.
Each week, ACCT Philadelphia receives an average of 100 dogs, and due to the spread of the virus, these dogs are at risk of contracting canine flu.
“It can be infectious for up to 21 days, and this is a real problem in a facility with multiple dogs. It’s spreading to all dogs, dogs,” Burnett said.
To combat that, the facility has set up this temporary home lined with tarps and kennels.From Monday, the sick dog will recover and the rest of the shelter will be thoroughly cleaned.
That space can accommodate 50 dogs.
“We’ll have to see what today brings in terms of numbers. If you stay on the lower end of your average intake, you’ll be fine, you won’t go above 50, but your average is 15-25. Get on that high end. It’s a little over 50,” says Barnett.
Regular kennels and offices are sanitized while sick dogs recover in the space.
“Our company is coming in the evening to sanitize the air. Part of the problem with this building is that the HVAC is not circulating properly. It’s the same as the one in ,” Barnett said.
The shelter will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for general cleaning.
ACCT Philly says there are three ways the public can help during this crisis. More fosters and adopters are needed and shelters are accepting donations too. You will have to pay for medical supplies for sick dogs and facilities for thorough cleaning.
