Removal plan of fish as a disease detected in McCallum salmon cage
The New Brunswick-based seafood giant says he has received positive test results for the infectious salmon anemia virus at one of the sites in Newfoundland’s marine cages.
Cold Ocean Salmon, a division of Cook Aquaculture, said viruses that were not a human health or food safety issue were detected as a result of the Atlantic salmon aquatic animal health surveillance program.
In a statement released Monday, the company said it plans to remove the fish. It states that it is the most successful way to manage the virus.
The virus was detected at a marine cage site north of Killback Cove, near McCallum, on the South Shore of Newfoundland. According to Cold Ocean Salmon, the site has six cages and is home to approximately 340,000 Atlantic salmon.
“The company has taken all responsible steps under the supervision of the Newfoundland and Labrador Fisheries Land Resources Department and is in line with government-approved policies,” said the company’s statement.
Joel Richardson, Cook’s vice president of public relations, said only one salmon tested positive for the virus.
“As a result of the confirmed trials, the farmed salmon were not dead and were planning to harvest a market-scale farm,” Richardson said in an email to CBC News.
