People with high cholesterol should eliminate carbohydrates rather than saturated fats: Research | Health News
Washington: Following research on hypercholesterolemia, researchers suggest that people with that condition should eliminate carbohydrates from their diet instead of fat. Familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetic disorder in which people’s cholesterol levels are two to four times higher than the average person.
Organizations, including the American Heart Association, suggest avoiding food from animal sources such as meat, eggs, and cheese, and avoiding coconut oil.
An international team of heart disease and diet specialists, including five cardiologists, reviewed dietary guidelines for people with familial hypercholesterolemia. They say health experts couldn’t find a justification for recommending a low-fat diet.
“For the past 80 years people with familial hypercholesterolemia have been told to lower their cholesterol with a low-saturated fat diet,” said David Diamond, a professor and cardiologist at the University of South Florida. “Our research has shown that a more “heart health” diet is a diet low in sugars, rather than saturated fat,” Diamond added.
Diamond and his co-authors say that following a low-carb diet is most effective for people at high risk of heart disease such as overweight, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Their findings are consistent with another paper recently published in the American Journal of Cardiology, tropical oils and animal-based foods.
