Prostate cancer found to be “high” likely to be caused by HPV in some cases
For new studies, Professor James Lawson and Professor Wendy Glen of the University of New South Wales, Australia, reviewed 26 existing studies on HPV and their links to prostate cancer.
They conclude that HPV types 16 and 18, which cause most cases of cervical cancer, have been found in normal, benign, and malignant prostate tissue.
High-risk HPV DNA was found in several studies with a significantly higher prevalence in prostate cancer compared to normal and benign prostate tissue.
“The causal role of HPV in prostate cancer is very likely,” they said.
According to a recent study, 231 (21.6%) of 1,071 prostate cancers were HPV positive and 74 of 1,103 benign prostate control samples were prostate cancer.
Professor Glenn said: “High-risk HPV is significantly more common in prostate cancer than in normal or benign prostate tissue, according to studies conducted in different countries and using different methods to identify HPV. Reasonably consistent evidence was found.
“Previous studies also showed that high-risk HPV was present in benign prostate tissue and developed HPV-positive prostate cancer of the same HPV type up to 10 years later.”
In the UK, the HPV vaccine has been regularly given to girls between the ages of 12 and 13 since 2008. Only men of the same age since last September.
There is a need for a universal vaccine, and the experts behind the research say it should be considered.
The authors found that in countries where cervical cancer mortality is high, prostate cancer mortality is also high.
In countries with low mortality from cervical cancer, the opposite was true.
