“Great concern” with new Ebola outbreak in western Congo | Democratic Republic of the Congo
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Ebola spreads to the western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with nearly 50 cases reported in large areas bordering the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.
Mike Ryan, CEO of WHO’s emergency experts, said 48 cases were confirmed in DR Congo’s state of Equator since the authorities announced a new outbreak on June 1. ..
There were three more probable cases, killing a total of 20 people.
“This is still a very active outbreak and I think it is still a big concern,” Ryan told News Briefings.
He added that the province included part of the Congo River, a vast geographical area with linked communities and long-distance travel.
Since the virus was discovered near the Ebola River in northern Congo in 1976, a new case in DR Congo’s Equatur marks the 11th largest Ebola outbreak in the country.

WHO said it vaccinated 11,327 people against the disease this month.
Ebola virus causes hemorrhagic fever and spreads through direct contact with the body fluids of infected people who suffer from severe vomiting and diarrhea.
The virus outbreak on the other side of the country has killed more than 2,277 people since 2018.
WHO declares outbreaks in Ituri and North Kivu that’s all June 25th.
According to experts, the use of vaccines and rapid containment efforts such as mobile hand-washing stations and door-to-door education campaigns have prevented the disease.
The number of infections in new outbreaks was small, but Ryan warned: “It’s very important to keep an eye on these other emerging diseases in the era of COVID.”
“We found that the outbreaks of northern kibs and other earlier Ebola could very easily get out of control,” he added.
One of the poorest countries in the world, the Democratic Republic of the Congo also addresses the measles epidemic, which killed more than 6,000 people, and COVID-19, which infected more than 3,000 people and killed 188 people.
The WHO reported in its latest weekly Monday report that the spread of outbreaks in Equatur was a complex humanitarian crisis and multiple illness outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as an ongoing armed group expelling thousands of people.
