Michael J. Fox touts ‘breakthrough’ in Parkinson’s disease testing
Actor Michael J. Fox’s new op-ed United States of America today It spurred the discovery of a test he hails as “one of the most important Parkinson’s disease breakthroughs in decades.”
According to Fox, a newly developed “very accurate” spinal fluid test can detect Parkinson’s disease in living human cells.
“This is a first and monumental leap for our disease,” wrote the “Back to the Future” star.
Fox said the test allows for diagnosis before symptoms appear.In Fox’s case, it was the “innocent-looking fluttering” of his fingers. You can also track how it affects risk, onset and progression.
“It is no exaggeration to say that we have entered a new era in Parkinson’s disease research,” Fox wrote. “We can begin to answer questions that have puzzled scientists, doctors and patients ever since James Parkinson first wrote about the disease in 1817.”
Since 2000, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has researched Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that causes uncontrolled movements such as tremors, stiffness, difficulty walking, balance and coordination. Fox, 61, was first diagnosed with the disease when he was 29.
The publicity for his new test comes just days after Fox told CBS Sunday Morning’s Jane Pauley that his Parkinson’s disease was getting harder to deal with.
“I’ve been thinking about the death of it…I’m not going to be 80,” he said. Said.
The disease, which affects about 500,000 Americans, currently has no cure.
