Veterinarians warn of highly contagious canine flu

Rochester, Minnesota (KTTC) – Pets often become part of the family, so everything is done to keep them healthy. Veterinarians are now issuing red flags about the flu affecting dogs.

The disease is called canine flu and is a highly contagious respiratory virus that is transmitted among dogs. Minnesota Animal Health Commission has released new guidance for dog owners, facilities and veterinarians as it tracks more confirmed and suspected cases in Hennepin, Anoka and Washington counties.

Cases of canine flu began in 2015, and so far, the Minnesota Animal Health Commission has suspected more than 200 cases in 2023, according to Dr. Treader of Rochester’s Northern Valley Animal Clinic.

“Dogs going to dog parks, dogs going to groomers, dogs going to dog daycare, all these situations are going to be more kenneled,” Dr. Treader explained.
