Raton Baton Rouge (BRPROUD) – Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center enrolls the first two patients nationwide in a new study investigating the association between COVID-19 and cancer cases.
Researchers at COVID-19 in the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Patient Study will investigate how COVID-19 affects treatment and outcomes in cancer patients. According to Scott Miller, spokeswoman for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, the researchers also aim to identify genetic risk factors for cancer patients and markers for COVID-19 critically ill patients.
“Through NCCAPS, blood samples are collected and medical information and copies of medical images of approximately 2,000 cancer patients diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 are collected,” Miller writes. “By gathering this information, researchers will investigate how COVID-19 affects cancer treatment and outcomes in patients, and determine the genetic risk factors and markers of severe COVID-19 in cancer patients. Cancer patients who have a COVID-19 test or are already virus-positive can participate in the study. Those patients must be 18 years of age or older and have a previous or current cancer diagnosis.
Miller said 10 sites in Mary Bird Perkins’ clinical trials network in Louisiana are participating in this national study.
