As summer approaches, Illinois officials are spreading awareness about the dangers of tick-borne diseases.top story
(NBC Chicago) – As part of the Illinois Department of Public Health’s information campaign during Lyme Disease Awareness Month, officials are urging residents to take precautions and exercise caution while enjoying the outdoors this summer.
Several species of ticks call Illinois home. Among them is the Blacklegged tick, which is found throughout the Chicago area.
The ticks can spread many diseases, including Lyme disease, according to IDPH officials.

“Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States,” said Dr. Sameer Vohra, director of IDPH, in a statement. “We encourage everyone who enjoys spending time outdoors to be educated on how to protect themselves from tick-borne diseases.”
Lyme disease is contracted by a tick bite and symptoms usually appear 3 to 30 days after the bite.
Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain. A bullseye rash usually also appears around the site of an infected tick bite.
If left untreated, the disease can progress, leading to stiff neck, facial paralysis, palpitations, and arthritis.
People who are bitten and treated with appropriate antibiotics generally recover quickly, IDPH says.
Illinois residents also face the threat of spotted fever group rickettsiosis, tularemia, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis, all of which have been detected in the state.
Lone star mites have also been detected in several southern suburban counties, including Grundy, Will, Kankakee, and Kane counties. These ticks can spread the Heartland virus, which usually causes fever, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, and joint pain.
To avoid tick bites, residents should stay in the middle of the trail and avoid areas with lots of grass and deciduous woods.
Repellents containing at least 20% DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil can also help. Light-colored clothing makes ticks easier to spot, and early removal is important to prevent the spread of disease.
