In a new finding, the researchers pointed out that the placenta has a minimal expression of the ACE2 receptor and an enzyme called TMPRSS2 that the virus uses to enter cells.
“These results consistently show that human placental tissue co-expresses ACE2 and TMPRSS2 to a negligible level,” they wrote.
This finding provides a possible explanation for why SARS-CoV-2 is rarely found in female fetuses and infants infected with the virus.
The researchers claimed that vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 was unproven. Vertical transmission is the transmission of germs from the mother to the fetus.
Nonetheless, it is possible that the virus may infect the placenta through another route of entry, interacting with other proteins. However, “more research is needed to test the involvement of COVID-19 in pathogenesis.”
