Pitt Study: Pregnant Black Women Unfairly Tested for Drug Use in Hospitals
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Postnatal drug testing has long been a practice in Pennsylvania hospitals.
But a recent study from the University of Pittsburgh shows that race plays a role in testing.
“We found that black patients were disproportionately tested during labor and delivery, regardless of the patient’s drug use history,” said Dr. Marian Jalensky, associate professor of health policy and management at Pitt University. .
Yarensky, who led the study, believes bias is the reason testing is unequal.
“We feel these data add to what we know about why black patients distrust the health care system,” she says.
The study looked at data from nearly 40,000 women who delivered babies in Pennsylvania’s private large-scale health care system between 2018 and 2021. 76% of mothers were white and 16% were black.
“Among those who were drug-free in the year before giving birth, about 7% of black patients were tested, compared with about 4% of white patients,” said Jalensky.
“Even if mothers, black mothers, say they don’t use it, they end up getting tested. And that’s where the bias is, and that’s where we have to deal with it.” said Dr. Margaret Larkins Pettigrew of Allegheny Health. Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Diversity, Equity and Inclusive Officer at Network.
Larkins Pettigrew said AHN is working to incorporate training for anti-stigma staff at multiple stages.
“We talk about microaggressions,” she said. “We talk about privilege. We want to make people feel safe about their own biases, so we want to talk about all the things that haven’t been said before.”
KDKA-TV asked UPMC to provide an interviewee for its implicit bias procedure, but was told it had no expert.
Yarensky, on the other hand, believes that voluntary drug testing for women in childbirth could have a chilling effect.
“This type of testing procedure is seen as punitive for black patients and can actually discourage black patients from seeking antenatal care,” she said.
Researchers said drug testing for pregnant women is not mandatory and there are other screening tools recommended by the federal government.
The studied Pennsylvania health care system changed its labor and delivery protocols.
