KARAMAZOO, Michigan — WMed wants to help keep cancer out of hot Michiganda summers.
A free skin cancer spot check clinic will be held on Thursday, June 1 from 6-8pm at the WMed Health and Family Medicine clinic at 500 W. Crosstown Parkway.
“It’s important to take care of yourself and your skin. It’s important to think about prevention, and detecting new lesions is the first step toward treatment,” says Christie, Physician, Family Medicine, WMed Health. Vanderkolk said.
We welcome community members of all ages, WMed or not. According to the press release, no appointments are required and individuals will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.
We check for lumps, bumps, moles, rashes, warts, precancers, skin cancers and scars, and your doctor will advise you on the best next steps. Attendees will receive sunscreen upon joining, according to a press release.
“People with all skin types are at risk for skin cancer,” says Vanderkolk. “People who are concerned about skin blemishes are advised to have it examined by a qualified medical professional.”
The press release states that the following tips from the Centers for Disease Control can help you stay healthy in summer weather.
- Stay in the shade.
- Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face, head, ears, and neck.
- Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block both UVA and UVB rays.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
