A new blood biomarker may help quantify the effects of neurosurgery on the brain
Brain damage in patients undergoing brain tumor surgery may be assessed by measuring biomarkers in pre- and postoperative blood. A new study by researchers at the University of Gothenburg shows that increased markers are well consistent with disorders caused by poor blood flow.
Magnetic camera (magnetic resonance imaging, MRI) tests are currently used to determine if a patient’s brain has been damaged after brain surgery. MRI can identify areas of the brain that have been damaged by bleeding (bleeding) or lack of blood flow (ischemia).

Poor blood flow and neuropathy
Biomarkers currently being studied in patients undergoing surgery for brain tumors are well-studied in the area of neurological disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and traumatic brain injury patients. The markers examined are known as neurofilament light (NfL), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and tau protein. NfL is a marker of neuronal fiber damage, GFAP is a marker of supporting cell damage in the brain, and tau is a marker of neuronal damage.
The study is published in the scientific journal Neurosurgery. The study included 34 adult patients with glioma, one of the most common types of brain tumors. Biomarker concentrations were measured initially the day before surgery and then his 1, 3, 5 and 10 days after surgery.
This study shows that the level of the marker in blood correlates with both the degree of damage caused by oxygen deprivation occurring during surgery and the severity of neuropathy suffered by the patient.
