Canyon County mosquitoes are West Nile virus positive
Infected mosquitoes were collected in traps northeast of Caldwell.
Mosquitoes collected in Boise-Canyon County, Idaho, tested positive for the West Nile virus, the mosquito control zone announced Wednesday.
The infected mosquito was caught in a pregnant trap northeast of Caldwell on Tuesday. The trap uses water infused with alfalfa and yeast to attract female mosquitoes seeking a spawning site. These mosquitoes are more likely to have recently taken blood and are therefore more likely to be positive in West Nile than insects caught in other types of traps.
So far this season, the county has tested 374 pools for mosquitoes infected in the West Nile.
“Most people infected with the West Nile virus do not get sick. Some people develop fever, headaches, body aches, and sometimes mild flu-like symptoms such as lymph glands and rashes,” environmental and community health. Services Jaime Arensen said.
