San Francisco officials announce that hair and nail salons remain closed
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Mayor London Breed announced Wednesday that San Francisco has not made enough progress to prevent the new surge of COVID-19 incidents and will allow hair and nail salons to resume.
In a joint statement, Breed and Director of Health Dr. Grant Colfax said several key COVID-19 indicators were still in the city’s case surge and hospitalization and were under control before resuming. Said that it indicates what must be done.
“Personal services such as haircuts, massages, tattoos, body piercings, manicures and pedicures cannot be resumed at this time,” he said.
Other activities and businesses previously planned to resume on June 29 or July 13 will also remain suspended.
They include indoor dining, an open-air outdoor bar, indoor museums and aquariums, an outdoor swimming pool, and a reserved real estate open house.
Another update on the status of reopening in San Francisco will come on Friday.
“The San Francisco Board has done a great job following this spring’s stay home order. To keep the spread of COVID-19 down, we need to keep doing good work,” Breed said in a release. “We’ve been in this state for a long time, and we can’t afford to lose focus. It’s up to us all to contain the virus and keep moving forward as a city.”
As of Wednesday morning, San Francisco recorded 4,696 cases of COVID-19 during the outbreak that began in March, killing 50 people.
One of the main indicators of COVID-19 prevalence in the city (new cases per 100,000 people per day) has increased to 7.7. This is well above the target of 1.8 and has soared since it resumed at 3.5 on May 18.
The rate of increase in hospitalization of COVID-19 patients (not including patients transferred from other countries) is also an important indicator.
The goal of the city’s health authorities is to keep that rate below 10%. On Wednesday the indicator showed a 33% increase.
San Francoisco’s hospital capacity, including the percentage of available emergency care and ICU beds, is now within acceptable limits: 27% for emergency beds and 28% for ICU.
“If the current surge continues, San Francisco hospitals could be overwhelmed in the next few months, resulting in ten times more cases than the April surge,” Colfax warned. .. “We crushed that curve.
