COVID-19 outbreak in Colorado increases for the first time since early June
Although the number of active COVID-19 outbreaks in Colorado increased for the first time since June this week, the increase in cases and deaths associated with these clusters remained relatively modest.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported between 169 and 178 active coronavirus outbreaks last week between July 8 and Wednesday. The numbers have been declining weekly since June 3. States define an outbreak as at least two cases related to a common location or event.

The total number of cases associated with state outbreaks has increased by 3.7%, exceeding 10,000 in the latest report. This is the highest rate of increase for three weeks, but well below May, when cases increased by at least 20% in most weeks.
The largest new outbreak was the Buena Vista correctional facility, with 35 prisoners and four staff testing positive.
Other notable new outbreaks are:
- Colorado Academy Summer Camp, Lakewood: 21 cases
- Denver Water Division: 11 cases
- Colorado Springs Airport: 5 cases
Outbreak-related deaths increased 2.3% last week to 987. Growth was higher than in the last two weeks, but down from June levels.
The lower mortality rate compared to cases indicates an outbreak Shift from nursing homes and residential health facilities to environments such as restaurants and offices.. Healthy older people are at greatest risk of dying from the new virus, but younger people are also dead.
However, it is unknown whether the mortality trend will continue to decline. Residential medical facilities such as nursing homes and rehabilitation centers accounted for 11% of all outbreaks in June, but have so far increased to 20% in July. In the weeks leading up to Wednesday, the state reported five new outbreaks in housing facilities. There were 7 new outbreaks at restaurants, 2 at hotels, 1 at churches, and 1 at pet food factories and nurseries.

- Sterling Correction Facility: 603 cases, 3 deaths
- From the Cise-Simonet Detention Center in Denver: 426 cases, no death
- JBS Meat Packing Plant, Greeley: 286 cases, 6 dead
- Cherry Creek Nursing Center, Aurora: 159 cases, 34 deaths
- Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs: 144 cases, 26 deaths
- Mountain Vista Health Center in Wheat Ridge: 137 cases, 32 deaths
- Steven Roberts Original Dessert, Aurora: 132 cases, 1 death
- Cargill Meat Facility, Fort Morgan: 108 cases, 4 deaths
The number of resolved outbreaks—where the state believes the virus is no longer widespread—increased from 215 last week to 237 this week.
